The U.S. EPA has proposed the monitoring of 30 currently unregulated contaminants in water systems. This is the third Unregulated Contaminant Monitoring Regulation (UCMR), which is issued every five years per the Safe Drinking Water Act. These 30 contaminants–two viruses and 28 chemicals–may be present in drinking water. The data collected will help the EPA make critical decisions about potential health effects and long-term drinking water protection. The proposal is open for public comment until May 2, 2011.
